postponed the launch of its CUV for 2009

The German manufacturer Audi has said that the sale will take its new CUV the end of Audi 2009. This resolution has been given because Audi says that the marketing of all models at once, has become somewhat complicated. However, only 3 new models to join the range: the compact Audi Q5 and Audi 2 versions for the Audi Q7, and a hybrid diesel.

Another reason that has delayed the launch of these new models, Audi is not to promote the next version to the end of the year, usually known a significant drop in prices. The Audi Q5 and the two versions of the Audi Q7 will be sold as Audi 2010 models.

The Audi Q5 has for a long time under development, intended to indicate that everything will be built on the platform of the VW Tigua. It will be the direct competitor to the BMW X3 and upcoming Mercedes-Benz GLK.

Moreover, the Audi diesel version of the Audi Q7 which will be marketed around the same time, take a Audi V6 engine with 230hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. The powertrain will meet the environmental requirements of 50 states in the USA. According to the director of Audi in this country, Johan de Nysschen, "there will be only to adjust certain details so that the diesel engine is offered in future models Audi A4, Audi A6 and Audi A8.

The three models including the Audi Q7 Hybrid V6 280hp will be revealed at the Audi Detroit Auto Show 2009.

The manufacturer says

"It's ECO-Logical!"
Overview

Based in Newcastle, WA, the ECM3 Commuter came to life in 2005, initially as nothing more than a summer project between current company founder and CEO David Joner and his then-11 year old son and 9 year old daughter which has now blossomed into much more than that. In fact, ECO's website boasts that "the amazing engineering" of the vehicle "has its humble beginnings rooted in the ingenuity of an American family," leading at least one reader to wonder whether ECO knows the meaning of the word humble.

Joner's background is at the ol' dealership. In sales. But before you scoff or gag, think about it. Who better to run a car company but a car salesman?
What we like

The cockpit: While it looks a bit snug, I love the cleverness in placing the entire console in the center of the car, with the gauges shifted towards the driver.

The safety: Despite being a motorcycle, the ECM3 has been built to automobile safety standards. Not only that, but in March 2009 Joner told a local online magazine that the ECM3 was going to be safety tested by the very same lab contracted by Detroit and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and that the ECM3 is "not a 5-star, but it’s better than four and a half."

If true, they've chosen to omit it from the safety information while at the same time noting the car's equally critical Trunk Entrapment Release feature. Curious choice.

The Targa top: What else is there to say? If you're going to commute an hour or two every day, might as well be in a convertible.
What we don’t

The design: From some angles it's not so bad, but one thing's true: she looks better coming than she does going. The bulky design overemphasizes the single wheel with a clueless abandon, seemingly oblivious to how bad it looks.
Conclusions

In another dazzling example of humility, ECO claims that hundreds of dealerships throughout the world are right now committed to bringing this "automotive piece of history" to market. A request for dealer information went unanswered, but that's OK because there's something more important going on here.

Can that $14,000 MSRP be accurate? It's almost incredulously low, considering the modest financial resources of such a small start-up company trying to compete in the US auto market, right?

Enter the true measure of ECO's American ingenuity: the ECM3 is being manufactured in China.

Triac from Green Vehicles

Specs:

* Type: Electric vehicle
* Class: Three-wheeled motorcycle
* Manufacturer: Green Vehicles
* Propulsion system: 20 kW AC PMSM water-cooled electric motor
* Top Speed: 80 mph
* Vehicle range: 100 miles
* Fuel(s): Electric
* Battery system: Lithium-ion (144V)
* Time to full battery recharge: 5-6 hours
* Price: $24,995
* Availability: NA

The manufacturer says

"The Triac proclaims to the world 'yes, I am going to run longer than previous EVs; and yes, I am going to do it in a seriously handsome fashion."
Overview

The Triac, made by Ehab Youssef's Northern California-based Green Vehicles, is a three-wheeler that stirred up a lot of interest when it first made the rounds on car sites, notably in May 2008 when autobloggreen ran an entry on the vehicle. It generated enough interest to overwhelm the company and force a press release of sorts, in which they claimed that the Triac would be for sale that summer. Then, it vanished.

Over a year later, the Triac has re-emerged. She appeared at the beginning of October 2009 at the AltCar Expo with some slight changes to her design, but otherwise acting like the last year or so of delays never happened. At the very least, the Triac's coming-out suggests that the company still intends to bring the vehicle—along with another pair of electric cars—to market at some point in the near future.
What we like

The design: Proud design, all things considered, and looking fairly sophisticated from a variety of angles, especially her side profile. The 2+1 wheel configuration is, for me, the preferred 3-wheel configuration, and it finds easy purchase in the Triac. However, word from the AltCar Expo is that her interior—in particular the cramped cabin—leaves much to be desired.

The other vehicle: Green Vehicles has designed the only NEV that I caught myself liking, even remotely… the Moose. Here's an NEV with a top speed of 35 mph and a range of 50 miles, but the Moose isn't a tiny golf cart wanna-be; instead, it's much closer in looks to a VW van, which might actually make her practical.
What we don’t

The options: Want to equip your Triac with an iPod docking cradle? No problem, that'll be $495. How about AC? Tack on $2,500. These are part of a set of features referred to as a "performance package" that's "coming soon", although it would be nice just to see the regular package appear at all (with AC as a standard feature).

The price: Never mind the performance package; without it the Triac is still asking just under $25,000. Maybe that MSRP seemed reasonable in the spring of 2008, when bigger car makers with deeper pockets were, publicly at least, hardly even paying lip service to the notion of an electric car. Now similarly priced vehicles like the Nissan Leaf are in the pipeline, giving consumers pause about spending this kind of cash on this kind of vehicle when they can just wait a little longer and get a whole lot more bang for their buck.
Conclusions

According to an item in the Los Gatos Weekly-Times from 2007, Youssef founded Green Vehicles in response to "the high cost of gasoline, the effects of fossil fuel emissions on the environment, the war in Iraq and the lack of education surrounding the availability of alternative transportation vehicles."

Noble ideas, for certain, but whatever the reasons were that caused such lengthy delays in the Triac may prove so costly as to derail the brand and the aspirations altogether.

Future Car Technologies

Main energy sources

Andrew A. Frank argues that hybrid cars that can be plugged into the electric grid (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles) will soon become standard in the automobile industry. This is confirmed by the current PHEV mass-production race, especially among Toyota, GM and Ford. Other technologies include the following:

* Dual-mode vehicle or vehicles able to platoon that use relatively small electric motors and fuel supplies or battery reserves for door-to-door service off electrically powered arteries. Some swap battery packs to avoid waiting associated with recharging. This also avoids deep discharge that shortens battery life and makes a smaller and lighter battery pack with logistically infinite range using incremental energy sipping through frequent fully automatic battery exchange at speed. The monorail mode provides superior safety at very high speed.
* Battery electric vehicles have the potential of using locally available sustainable energy resources while at the same time reducing vehicle energy requirements by 1/2 to 1/4 when using batteries to store electricity. A new high-performance electric sports car, the Tesla Roadster has attracted much media attention since its release in June 2006.
* Hydrogen cars could eventually be produced that use sustainable energy resources and water. The resulting hydrogen could be burned in an engine or converted back into electricity by a fuel cell and its support systems instead of a battery to be powered as an electric vehicle. Due to the additional conversion losses and added distribution and support logistics overall efficiency is currently not as good as current ICE (”internal combustion engine”) vehicles. Rather it is far simpler and more efficient (by a factor of three to six by some estimates) to transmit locally available sustainable electricity directly into the batteries of a battery electric vehicle.
* Alternative fuels are being proposed: alcohol fuel, water, highly compressed air, garbage, hemp oil.
* Powering electric vehicles directly from the grid would use the least of any kind of fuel because utilities obtain much higher efficiencies than cars. Vehicles also do not have to carry the weight of the many components between the filler cap and the tip of the exhaust. Electrification of highways and arterials is greatly simplified if vehicles form into trains

HYUNDAI IX35 2010 CONCEPS

The first undisguised images of the all-new Hyundai ix35 are already released. The new C-segment crossover showcases the new ‘fluidic sculpture’ design language of the Hyundai brand. Like we wrote last week, the ix35 will replace the popular Tucson – one of Europe’s best-selling SUVs – and will make its world debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month.

According to Hyundai, the all-new ix35 design lines will be carried over to other new models from the brand, and the hexagonal grille will become a recognisable family attribute.

The new Hyundai ix35 combines enhanced aerodynamics, sleeker styling and refined powertrain in order to deliver better fuel efficiency and lower CO2 emissions than rival SUVs.

2014 Audi S4 and S5 to get turbo'd four-pots, massive weight reduction

Car and Driver sat down with Audi's global head of product engineering, Michael Dick, to discuss the future of the automaker's offerings and how it plans to tackle the ongoing issue of weight. While all automakers cite consumer demand and government regulation as one of the major reasons overall vehicle weight has skyrocketed in the last 20 years, Audi is actively pursuing its "smaller-is-better credo." To that end, the automaker currently has a next-generation A5 prototype running around that's 880 pounds lighter than the current car. Dick told C&D that the mule is using an increased amount of aluminum, magnesium and high-strength steel to reduce mass, and says while the current TT is 69% aluminum, the next A6 (due in 2011 or 2012) will have even more, and the next A4/A5/S4/S5 will feature more still when they arrive in 2014.

Dick went on to say that the down-sizing of the current S4 and S5's engine from a V8 to a supercharged V6 is the first step, and its possible that the next generation Ss will be 20% lighter, pack 30% less displacement and will likely come with turbocharged four-cylinder engines (think TT, TT S and TT RS mills).
On the topic of styling, expect the next generation of Audis to take cues from the Sportback concept shown at the Detroit Auto Show. The Audi A7 will arrive in production form later this year, and while the overall shape won't disseminate throughout the Audi line-up, the headlamps, tail-lights and refined single-frame grille will carry over to the rest of the range. Dick claims that the A7 is already eight seconds faster than the current S5 around the Nurburgring, thanks primarily to its curb weight, which is expected to come in at around 3,000 pounds. We won't believe that until we see it on an official spec sheet, but it's comforting to know that at least one luxury automaker gets "it" and there's no doubt it will pay dividends in the marketplace if all these initiatives come to fruition.

Spy Shots: Production 5 Series GT revealed via BMW TV

As expected, BMW is obviously pretty far along with the production version of the 5 Series Gran Turismo concept that debuted earlier this month at the Geneva Motor Show. While show-car details like the thin metal blades connecting the side mirrors from the concept have been replaced with more conventional bits, the general shape of the new GT has been left almost exactly intact. The same can't be said about the interior, which seems to have lost its artful air in exchange for BMW's typically Germanic sobriety.

We'll reserve final judgment for when the production version makes its official debut, likely at an undetermined auto show later this year. Click past the break to see the production BMW 5 Series GT on a video capture of BMW TV, along with the car's German-speaking project leader, Hans-Jurgen Branz.

V12 Vantage Roadster

The V12 Vantage Roadster will have the same 6,0 liter engine as the coupe, delivering some 510 bhp (380 kW / 517 PS) with 570 Nm (420 lb ft) of torque. Due to the extra weight required to stiffen up the chassis, the performance of the Roadster will be slightly stunted compared to the coupe. However, the V12 Vantage Roadster will still be one of the fastest convertibles on the market.

While the V12 Vantage coupe is limited to 1000 units. Rumors already suggest that the roadster will be limited to 500 units. If the rumors are correct, we will probably find out in September during this year's Frankfurt motor show. Then we will also know how much more expensive the roadster is going to be compared to the coupe.

Time for something new

After taking pictures for the last few years, it was time for a change. Taking hundreds of shots each and every week, just to have them fly by in a post ended up being just like the shows themselves - blink, and you miss it...

But no more. Today, I announce the debut of autoworksphoto.com . All future coverage of Cars & Coffee will be under this site, as well as other Southern California events.

If that's not enough reason to go there, I've gone through tens of thousands of shots to pull out all the highlights of the last two years at Crystal Cove as well. Before looking back at it, you sometimes forget the incredible vehicles that showed up there. Hopefully, you'll find something you'll like. :)

The Autoworks Photography site has a full comment system, as well as photo rankings, so feel free to give your opinion of what you see. And a keyword system, so you can find the shots you want. And of course, you can buy high quality prints of each and every picture
